Hidden Gem: I Came Upon A Lighthouse

On EcoDecode, I normally write about decoding Nobel Prizes in Economics so that everyone can understand the significance of these massive breakthroughs or write reviews and summaries of books that are quite overtly related to economics. However, today I want to write about a book that I had honestly never heard of before. A book that may not be directly related to economics but provides a hidden insight into the life of one of India’s greatest business people: Ratan Tata.

I recall picking up this book at my local bookshop just because it looked like a light and fun read. Something that was different from my normal reading list. ‘I Came Upon A Lighthouse’ by Shantanu Naidu is a short memoir by Shantanu Naidu, about his friendship and work with Mr.Tata. The books starts with Shantanu’s community service initiative for helping stray dogs called ‘Motor Paws’. Due to their shared love for animals, Mr.Tata and Shantanu meet leading to a long friendship. It is quite interesting seeing this camaraderie unfold throughout the book and blossom into a beautiful but unlikely friendship. The author’s beautiful writing and the adorable illustrations that adorn every next page definitely add to the charm of this book. Honestly, just the illustrations themselves could convince you to buy this book.

Now, when I put my management thinking hat on, I try to analyse the descriptions and actions of Mr.Tata so as to get an insight into small everyday actions that make him a better manager and better leader. Although the book is definitely not about management, there are small snippets that tell the reader about work ethic and truly being devoted to one’s work. Tiny rules that the author states that Mr.Tata follows like working in flights but reminding the author not to put any pressure on himself, not calling anyone for work after 9:30, never complaining but rather practicing a process of mindful problem solving and many other instances.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this as a light but heartening read that anyone is bound to put down smiling. Really, I don’t think that it is possible to read this book without having a smile on your face.
