“The best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” - Cal Newport
Book Summary:
Deep Work is a best selling book Cal Newport that is all about focus and using that as medium to enjoy one’s work. Cal Newport asserts that deep work is the only way to fulfillment, satisfaction and happiness in one’s work. The book possess the detail of a true academic as well as conversationalism that makes you truly understand the concept of deep work. Cal Newport has a special talent for making the concept vivid through his examples, whether they draw from the experiences of Adam Grant, Walter Isaacson or his own. With many quotable sentences that will sure to find a place in every reader’s memory, reading this book may be a transformative experience or one that reaffirms your existing way of life. This is a book that is every bit as scientific as it is insightful. There is also an enlightening discussion on skills that will be valuable in the future and deep work is definitely the foremost.
My Thoughts:
In a society wherein miniscule attention spans have become commonplace (leading to a lack of depth, understanding and fulfillment in one’s work, and consequently, a lack of true insightfulness and fewer, if any, intellectual journeys), Deep Work is a book that guides readers towards higher achievement and happiness. It is definitely one of the best books that I have read this year and is definitely one that will still be as good when I inevitably reread it. Moreover, it has excited me to read more of Cal Newport’s books (something that I have already started doing). One of the insights from the book that I found most interesting was the author’s astute observation that deep work is becoming more valuable but also rarer, thereby creating a classic market demand and supply disequilibrium.
Notes:
Once again, I will be sharing summary notes for the book ‘Deep Work’.
